The Effect of Socio-economic Deprivation on Depression According to the Age of the Elderly

Abstract
The purpose of the paper is to compare a difference in socio-economic deprivations according to age by classifying the elderly into 60s, 70s, and 80s age categories, and to examine factors of socio-economic deprivations and their affect on the depression of aged people. The study constructed 19 deprivation categories using the 7th year(2012) data of KOWEPS(Korea Welfare Panel Study) and utilized a scoring method in order to analyze the relationship between deprivation points and used the method in analyzing 2,891 householders aged 60 or older. As a result, the effect of various social deprivations in old age showed a significant difference depending on the age 60s, 70s, and 80s. The age 60s showed a statically significant effect on housing, social, health care, and employment deprivations. The age 70s had a significant effect on dietary, social, health care, and employment deprivations, while the age 80s had a significant effect on dietary, social, health care deprivations. The result shows a difference in deprivation factors that affect on deprivation according to old age, where health care and social deprivations influenced the most on the depression of all elderly age. Hence, the study explored practical implication of social welfare for depression prevention associated with social deprivation in old age.
